The longest running daily soap in the history of Indian Television has undoubtedly been Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which has been running for almost 8 years on Star Plus channel with more than 1800 episodes. This was the first serial which invented the "saas bahu" concept which later became the story of almost all popular daily soaps. The serial had been consistently running high on TRP for years and this "saas bahu" saga seemed to be the choice of almost every housewife. Tulsi, the main protagonist of the serial became a household name and the producers Balaji Telefilms raked in huge moolah. Ekta Kapoor the head of Balaji Telefilms also bombarded a series of K-serials based on the "saas bahu" concept like Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. There came a time when she was called the queen on Indian Television and no television channel even dared to say anything to her. The channels like Star Plus became dependent on her serials for the popularity of the channel.
But Smriti Irani (Tulsi) left Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which started the decline of the biggest daily soap ever and of Ekta Kapoor. Then the Indian audience also became realistic and new trends evolved such as reality shows which bombarded TV channels and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. Balaji Telefilms and Star India Pvt Ltd (Rupert Murdoch's Star Group's Indian division) came to loggerheads recently and now Star Plus has decided to stop the telecast of Kyunki Saas Bhi. Ekta Kapoor's Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii have already been pulled off air by Star Plus and this would give a huge jolt to Ekta Kapoor. Star had ended its exclusive content deal with Balaji recently and even sold back 26% equity to Ekta Kapoor. The share prices of Balaji Telefilms also fell down drastically after Star ended the deal.
It seems that the K-era has finally come to an end and hope that television channels would bring new and mixed concept instead of a stereotype concept as had been the case with the K-serials.
